The most beloved cake creation competition is a real hit at the ball each and every year: The Zuckerbäcker Awards continue to live up to its reputation as an awe-inspiring focal point of this special night.

The ball, with its approximately 3,500 international guests, is the perfect occasion for talented pastry chefs and young apprentices to battle for the coveted titles of "Vienna Cakemaster 2020" and "Vienna Junior Cakemaster 2020" respectfully.

In order to bring the ball guests just that bit closer to the creative craft, the ball organisers will layout each and every showpiece in the foyer of the Hofburg. This big cake show is a massive highlight of the event, to which returning guests to the ball can only attest. But be warned, casting your eyes on these wonderful treats may make your tummy rumble!

Theme

This year we have an exciting concept for the participants; the jury of the ZuckerBäckerball has selected “Comics” (aka comic books) as the theme of the 12th edition of the contest.

There is already huge excitement as pastry chefs start to get their teeth into this year’s fantastical theme.

During the ball, the jury can be seen expertly reviewing, tasting and evaluating the edible works of art. Voting takes place anonymously via of the candidate number. The basis for the assessment of the showpieces follows five main criteria:

  • Compliance with the call for entries / task description

  • Creativity

  • Processing of the ingredients

  • Implementation of the theme

  • General difficulty level of the showpiece

The award ceremony will take place at midnight in the Festsaal of the Hofburg.

The Honorary Consul and "Ball Mama" Birgit Sarata is looking forward to the competition: "The cake show is fantastic; the ball guests come in big numbers to look and see what marvellous creations are on display."
