The Vienna Chamber of Commerce (Wirtschaftskammer Wien) invited Maria Smodics-Neumann, Chair of Trade and Crafts and Deputies to the National Council (Nationalrat) and Markus Grießler, Chair of Tourism and Leisure Economics of the Vienna Economic Chamber, to a press conference in the Vienna Hofburg, where the topic "Viennese Ball Season" was in focus.

And it was stated that the love for ball visits in Vienna continues to rise. "We expect about 520,000 ball guests this season, which is 5,000 more visitors than in the previous year," says Markus Grießler.

According to a study, the Chamber of Commerce expects that ball guests will spend an average of 290 euros this year, of which around 180 euros will be spent around or directly on the ball night, i.e. for tickets, table reservations and meals on site.

The fashion trends of the ball season are said to be dresses with red tones, metallic-like fabrics and elegant updos.

Vienna’s most loved ball

It was also stated again that the "ball" phenomenon has a large number of patrons, but the proportion of younger visitors has been steadily increasing for the past few years. This also brings new challenges for event organisers. In addition to the traditional ambience and classic flair of the Hofburg, the organisers have to keep up with the times, and offer modern technology and program highlights.

The successful implementation of this ambition is underlined by the latest survey conducted by the Chamber of Commerce, which named the ZuckerBäckerball as the most popular ball in Vienna.

The most popular balls of the season 2019/20

  1. Zuckerbäckerball

  2. Kaffeesiederball

  3. Blumenball

This news was greeted with open arms by the organiser of the ZuckerBäckerball, Dr. Kurt Schebesta: "With a huge amount of ball events - after all, around 450 in the upcoming ball season - it's phenomenal to be considered the most popular ball. This not only makes us proud, but also represents a permanent challenge to meet the expectations of the 3,500 ball visitors at the ZuckerBäckerball - we will try it again on 16 January 2020 in the Hofburg. I think that the success is mainly due to our concept of combining the ball tradition typical of Vienna with a presentation of confectionery art, and to be able to present a lively and fun event despite the dress code."

Also “Ball-Mutti” Vice Honorary Consul Prof. Birgit Sarata can understand the ranking well: "For me the ZuckerBäckerball is a ball that brings a zest for life! Even as a child you love sweets and cakes. As a reward you go to the ZuckerBäckerball and enjoy what you loved as a child!"
